This is my very first post to this site as I have just joined. Bear (pun) with me as I go thru the learning curve on posting images. This was a fantastic trip with over 7,000 exposures taken in 5 days. Weather was great. Many more photos to follow.
This uncropped photo of an Alaska Brown Bear was taken in Lake Clark National Park in Alaska. Equipment used was a Canon 40d, 500mm f/4 lens with 1.4 converter. Camera settings were ISO 800, 1/1000, f/5.6. Minor adjustments in Lightroom.

Great pose and nice comp. Looks like this was taken in the late afternoon and if so the image captures the light well. I find the shadow on the bears face a little distracting and may be inclined to lighten it a little using the shadow/highlight tool in Photoshop CS and sharpen the eye a touch, not sure if this is my monitor?

    Looking forward to seeing more.

Given the direction of light then there was little you could do about the shadows on the face.
I am not familiar with LR, but you could certainly bring some light out of the shadows in PS.
Nevertheless I think this is very effective.

Lightroom is my only image processing tool these days. You can bring out more details in the shadows using LR. I agree about sharpening. A lower ISO would have worked as well.

Hi Louis, some very good advice here and totally agree in the observations made.

Might be tempted to reduce also some of the 'hotspots' in the BG too, be careful about going above 800 with the 40D. I would also consider using Canons DPP for RAW processing as you will find far more detail, clarity and the image will be more faithful to how it was, then export to PS as a 16 bit Tiff.

    Look forward to seeing more;)

Welcome to BPN and a fine shot to start out with. Suggestions given are all good ones. A little work on this and a fine image can become a "killer" image. Beautiful light.

With some tweaking of the shadows and selective USM, this will take this fine image up another notch

Love the color and the light surrounding the bear. Also like how you got a little light in the eye as well.

Welcome from another newbie. Love the mood created here, including the shadow. Yes, all the great tips mentioned is valid and could be applied, bit the mood of this bear drew me from the thumbnail.
