First of the Cards to come in. Snowed last night, so they are in the yard.

Nikon D40x, 1/250, aperture priority, f9, 100 iso, focal length 280 mm, monopod. Cropped to vertical. Slight saturation adjustment.

    Hazel:

Nicely exposed bird, with well scaled perch. I had a minute to work on it, so:

I think the branches are a bit busy, so simplified the image by cropping from the left.
Sharpened the face a bit. It could use more, but the jpeg didn't accept it gracefully.
Smoothed out the blue, inverted tear drop mark above the head.
    Slight levels adjustment.

Just some options for you to consider. You could also smooth out the background in general with a bit of gaussian blur if you would like.
The shadow from the perch is a bit distracting.

I would suggest bumping up your ISO off of 100, it will give you much more flexibility on shutter speed and f/stop.

    Cheers

    Randy

Thanks. I'm always eager to learn....that's one reason why I post here.

Neat picture of the little lady! I like the crop in the repost as well.

You caught that all-important gleam in the eye Hazel. And with Randy's re-post, the sharpened beak and slight crop bring this into contention. Nicely done.
