Donned my spiffy camo waders and got right down into a lake for this Ring-necked Duck. The ducks got so close, they filled up my frame. Love the way the 5D brought out the purple cheek. Wish for no dark spot in the BG but can't have it all. No SAT was applied to the BG at all and less than usual to the bird.

Marina, very close to perfection ! I donīt see the dark spot that you mention. It is always dificult to bring up detail on the dark areas, you did great !

Very cool! Just curious, where did you shoot this? I have been unable to get anywhere near these guys in my neck of the woods

Perfect sharpness and a nice crop (I'm assuming you cropped from vertical). You captured the purple quite well.

Really like the subtle green and purple sheens you captured. Nicely done.

Nice mug shot, Marina. Looks a bit like a tuffed duck,

The light has brought out the purple sheen nicely. Love the droplets, and the BG looks fine to me.

No, Doug, this was shot in vertical. I decided to change it up a little bit when they got close and focus on their heads since I couldn't get their whole body. I took out most of the reflection since it added nothing to the image. Thanks for asking.

This was photographed in a Florida lake where they winter.

A strong portrait image that works well for me - I'd be tempted to try a little selective more sharpening on the bird itself ;)

Thanks - it helps when one has never seen the one posted before and it is not a native African. (Seen Tufted Ducks in UK)

Love the way the 5D brought out the purple cheek.
Lovely portrait Marina, and nice comp! You've to give yourself better credit...you aligned yourself properly with the available light, and waited for the perfect head angle...and with those good techniques any camera body would have given you the colours:).

Hi Marina. Nice light, sharpness, head angle, and comp. I also like the texture you captured in the bow wave. Well done.
