    Default Mark IV Pre-production Images

    Attached Images Attached Images

The four images I am posting here were created with a pre-production MIV bodies when I had a chance to test them two months ago.

The JPEGs that you see here were created from the large JPEGs that I created along with the RAW files. As I did not and do not have the DPP that supports MIV RAW images I could not convert them and was forced to go with the JPEGs.

This Sandwich Tern was photographed at Alafai Banks on a trip aboard the Hooptie Deux with BPN co-Founding Father James Shadle. (Note: other founders include Alfred and Fabs Forns, Blake Shadle, and Robert Amoruso. And to be technically correct, Robert O'Toole and Jim Neiger were with us at the start.)

Canon 800mm f/5.6 IS with the 1.4X II TC and a pre-production EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 640: 1/1000 sec. at f/8 confirmed by histogram check. Central sensor AI Servo AF. Slight crop for COMP. No NR.

    Default ISO 12,800

Canon 400mm f/4 L DO lens handheld with a pre-production Mark IV body. ISO 12800: 1/8000 sec. at f/5.6. Photoshop NR on the BKGR and the gull's mouth. I screwed up the EXP with this image while experimenting. There were a few hot pixels that could have been recovered in DPP or in ACR.

Art, They look great, Did you have a chance to microadjust before using or was everything OK. I noticed my combo needs plus 5 to produce the sharpest image. Ron

    Hi Arthur,
Can you please post the ISO 12800 image without the NR. It would help compare the noise handling performance at different ISO levels. :)

    Artie -
Was there a reason you only used Central sensor AI Servo AF for the BIF images? Did you try other modes?
    Did you use a tripod?

Most expert flight photographers (I do not include myself in that group) use and recommend the central sensor only (with or without expansion to surrounding points--depending on the camera body). Robert O'Toole (when he used Canon) was the only person I know who used 45-Point for flight all the time with great results and that was even true when he borrowed a MIII from me!

I think that I used 45-point in a few situations but without the DPP I cannot see the focusing points....

    Yes to the tripod.

I eventually answered your FLA e-mails :); did you get my response?

    Artie,
Those shots look great...especially for limited processing. Thanks for sharing the info....especially the higher ISO shots. That was what I was most curiious about.
