Will the price start with a 1 or a 2?

I'd be shocked if it started with a 1.

the current one is 1700 so I am guessing the MSRP is going to be 2k

Price be in the $2,400 range. But who does wildlife with a 70-200? I know Art uses it for people shots.

Does someone know what kind of IS system the previous model had? The new one is supposed to have a 4-stop benefit.

If it will have 4 stops benefit it will be a killer lens for performing art photography. But the $2400 makes it an expensive lens to own.

2400 OUCH ! that seems a little over the top for a 2 stop IS advantage, hopefully the AF is much faster as well

I have the non IS one and I dont see an upgrade to either of the IS ones anytime soon

Pao- The 70-200 is a superb lens for birds in flight when you have a relatively big bird coming within say 5-15 m of you. I use mine (f4 IS version) for gannets at Bonaventure and it works a treat (I've seen Artie use it there too). I also use this lens in situations where the wildlife is pretty tame and used to people. It was invaluable in Antarctica but I use it at home for waterfowl as well. So to answer your question, "who does wildlife with a 70-200"- I do! It is a "must-have" lens for wildlife IMO.

I know a few people who love using this lens for wildlife. In places like Kruger you often have super sightings quite close to your vehicle and then a superzoom is only good for photographing eyeballs and nose-hairs. Some of the guides in the private reserves have the 70-200 next to them permanently on a spare body, and get to use them frequently due to the nature of the sightings they get.

I personally would like to have one in my arsenal as many of the sightings I've had in the past year have been too close for my 100-400mm and I would like to be prepared for that. For birding I would agree it's a bit short.

It should have improved optics as well. The design includes 1 fluorite element and no less the 5 Ultra Low Dispersion elements. The MTF charts look much improved over the original. I expect the price will reflect all the improvements as well.

price is going to be £2,800 in the UK which is confirmed by a few dealers now.

£800 more than the new Nikon version.
