I created this image of a female Pied Kingfisher on a farm dam close to Kruger National Park. Captured from a small boat in slightly overcast conditions.

    Canon 300 F2.8 IS @ 300mm
    ISO 1250

Fantastic capture! Probably the best shot I have seen of a Pied Kingfisher hunting! If anything would consider cropping a bit off the bottom to get rid of the dark stripe and also add some room to the left.

Fantastic! I like the stretched wings, water droplets and the fish in its beak.

A slight crop from the bottom to remove the reflection would further enhance the composition. Thanks for sharing.

    Hendri,
I like the repost. Do you have any space at left? A little bit of space at the left to include the water splash would have been good and enhanced the pattern of droplets.

    Cheers,
    Sabyasachi

Hey Hendri, great sharpness for the exit, and just love the chaotic water. Of course, his catch a bonus. Well captured mate.

Amazing shot, Hendri. The kind that makes you smile and giggle when you get home and download that CF card!! I'll be watching for this one in the magazines.

did you have to post this magnificent picture above my meagre effort??? :(

as I said earlier - your best by miles so far. the eye-level angle from the boat takes it to another league. the more space added and brighter droplets makes it pop more and balances the comp.

    wish it was mine.

    superb.

Very nice! The repost is excellent, though there wasn't much room for improvement in the first place.

I'm on my substandard computer at work, but it appears the dark patches on the head around the area need to be lightened. Take that with a grain of salt though.

    Thanks for posting!

Awesome splashing action and superb low angle for this type of image. I do find it oversharpened in some areas though. A great bonus is the fish facing this way. Way cool image.

Hi Hendri, Just amazing action you captured. I like it for all of the postitive listed above. The repost looks great. Judging from the water rings it looks like it could use a little clockwise rotation. Thanks for sharing.

Eish! Now this one kicks butt! And the cropped version is right on the money! This is what bird photography is about, nailing that really exclusive one! Kudzus to you, Hendri!

Superb action, Hendri. I especially like the trails of water coming from the primaries. Otherwise all has been said.

I am overwhelmed by the response to this. Thanks to each and everyone for your views and comments.

Sabyasachi, thanks you for pointing it out in the first place.

Marco, I used a Canon 1D MKIII and AF set to AI Servo. Basically I focus on the hovering bird and track it down to the water when it dives. This is a very fast action and the success rate not that good. Lots of images gone to the bin. I would say this action was about 6-8 meters from me.

I'll echo what others have said - this is fantastic. I love the action, of course.

It's just really too bad that the 1DM3 has such terrible AF problems. Bah. :p
