    Default Starling

I usually avoid photographing these birds but when the light hits them just right they have the most beautiful colors.

Lower portion of the image was added (from the tip of the tail downward). Backyard set-up and a tripod was used.

    Canon 50D, 500mm f/4L, ISO 320, AV mode, 1/100 @ f/8, spot metering.

    Right out of the camera.

These guys have taken over our deck but I too find them to be beautiful, especially the chevrons. I showed a photo of one to a friend recently and she said "what an ugly bird." I couldn't believe it! Thanks for sharing how cool they look, especially in the winter. Perch ain't that bad and I really like the background. Also, nice capture of the twist around head pose.

The light cetainly has brought out the colours. Lovely look back pose, and good job with the tail. Perch not ideal, and I would tone down the highlights on it.

Why avoid photographing these lovely creatures it must be common in your part of the world but i would love to see this bird as it has great features. We have the Brahmini starlings and Mynas here which are from the same family . Anyways liked the sharpness and the focus on the bird .BG is also good apart from the unnatural perch.

Very beautiful colors, nice pose, great colors and BG. IF you could do a setup with a nice perch this would be over the top.

Thanks everyone. I see most are focusing on the perch and some have said they either don't like it or it's unnatural....I can't help the ones that don't like it (personal taste) and in regards to it being unnatural...it's a piece of driftwood I found after the North Easter we had a few months ago and I actually like it (again, personal taste).

These birds are considered by many to be a nuisance in this part of the world..an introduced bird that doesn't belong here and why I pass on photographing them for the most part.

    Hi Duane,

We discourage the Starlings here also. But I must admit they go thru some amazing changes in plumage, and are often quite beautiful when the light is right. This is an excellent shot showing the bird at its colorful best. Well done in every respect, and very nice work to extend the canvas at the bottom.

    like it,

    Kenn
