Workers had finished cutting back the "bullrushers" (as Huck Finn might say) around a large pond this morning, and this big guy was hunting breakfast among them -- successfully. Cropped and sharpened in LR. I kinda like the background, though it is a mighty busy one. C&C, please.

Nice catch on both sides of the camera Wendell! Good action capture, HA, and eye contact. The bg could be darkened a bit and a tad of contrast added to the bird to help it stand out more. The bird seems a bit soft on my monitor and it looks like the camera caught focus on the reeds in the foreground. Good job to capture lunch!

wendell, are you using center sensor?

Techs are solid, maybe a tad tight on the feet.

    Hi Wendell,
A very nice catch indeed for you and the subject...you have good color rendition, fine feather details, and a good head angle. I like this one...agree with Kerry on the techs. Would also suggest adding a little more canvas on the bottom for the virtual feet...good show...looking forward to your next one...

    Hi Jeff:

I used matrix metering on this. Are you thinking center-weighted metering would be better here?

I was wondering if you were using a dynamic type of Auto-focusing (e.g., ring of fire) that might have caused the point of focus to be slightly away from the bird a tad, per Kerry's comment. If so, going to suggest to use the center sensor to stop the dynamic sensors from grabbing.

In this example, I am speaking about Auto Focus mode options, not metering options. Matrix is perfect, the metering mode does not need to be changed - well done.

Jeff, thanks for the explanation. Unfortunately, I'm unfamiliar with "Auto-focus mode options", but I'm still learning, so I will get there eventually.

Hi Wendell - love the action - not such a good day for the fish :)
    Ditto kerry and gus's comments.

    Keep em coming :)
