    Default Red-bellied Woodpecker

Took this image this past spring. Not sure if I like the crop but since the tree is so small in diameter, I did not like the look of a crop not showing anything on the right. This is full frame vertically, cropped on the sides.

    D300, 600VR, 1.4tc, f/7.1, ISO 400, 1/400th SS

Hope you enjoyed. C&C always welcome.

    Jason:

    Excellent exposure, sharpness and foot.

I agree about the horizontal crop, the traditional woodpecker crop, 1/3 sky, 1/3 bird and 1/3 trunk wouldn't work well here. In a perfect world, I might like a bit more on top, but I know this is all you have.

I might come in a bit for the right, not much.

    Lovely BG.

    Thanks for sharing.

Whats not to like. I think this image is perfect. The background is perfect. Nothing is competing with the subject for attention. The subject is a prime bird. Perfect plumage. Great head angle. Great lighting. And this is one of my favorite birds. Can you give any info on how you got this bird to be perched as it is. I will guess you shot this from a window at your house.

I took this image while "hiding" on the front porch behind some ferns at my folks place. As long as a person stays on the front porch ( its covered, roof only, and has hanging ferns and potted plants on the ground, etc...) the birds in the yard could care less of you being there. My Mother and Father spend their mornings there sipping coffee and the birds have grown accustomed to their being there over the past 35 years!

So...when I don't have a place to go...their front yard offers a vast amount of variety in the spring and summer. Just got to be patient and sit still.

    Excellent shot Jason,

Good detail, color, and bg. Agree that more room at the top would be nice, but the full-frame detail is first-rate.
There's a lot to be said for the birds becoming accustomed to us. :)

Beautiful Image! I can almost hear the "churrr...churrr". Have one of these in my yard, but I don't get to see it much. Great shot, very sharp, composition very good. The BG is a bit saturated for my taste, but a fine image.

I agree with the positives above, but would have to disagree with the great head angle comment. The HA would be much better if the bird's body was parallel to the sensor and the head was turned slightly towards us instead of away from us. The overcast light and simplicity are very nice however.

The background is a freshly mowed WELL maintained yard, LOL...spring time was very wet and the grass was simply gorgeous this year. Nothing was done to the sat's...it was just that lush and green. No mistaken the sound when one of these shows up in the yard...

Thanks for the replies so far. I wish I had a bit more room too, but it is what it is. Was not sure on the HA either...so its interesting to see what others think as well. I am not too "devout" on the HA...as long as its pleasing to my eye:D

I have posted a few WP images in the past and this is the type of image I'm trying for. I like everything about it...including the head angle...very pleasing to my eyes.
