    D3, 600, ISO 1250, f8, 1/320, fill @ -2.3 EV.

My first image taken in 2010.

It was -9 degrees this morning when I took this.
I used the feeder technique that's in my eBook to get this shot.
Not an easy bird to get on your perch, at least with a decent head angle.

Happy New Year to all of you.

Lovely pose and so sharp. I ordered your CD and today I started reading it, and there are some fabulous techniques in there. Simple and easy to do. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I hope to try some of them out soon.

Beautiful image. Very sharp, great pose, perch and HA. I love the snow on the branches. I think this would make a great Christmas card image.

Hey Man, You are just too good. Is this within driving distance of Bosque? Are you still at Bosque?

Love the perch, the bird, the pose, the head angle, the snow. The perfect techs. The sweet BKGR. What else is there? -9 is four degrees colder than I have ever been. I admire your dedication.

Love the perch, pose, and great light! Nice and sharp. Regarding the ID, I'm fairly certain this is a Brown-Capped Rosy-Finch.

Hey Artie, This was taken north of Taos. About 5 hours from Bosque. I leave to drive home in the morning.

Doug, thanks for the correct ID. I was on the fence about it and rushed to get it posted without really doing my homework.

Took the liberty of changing the title of the image. Hope you don't mind.

Just ordered the cd as well, can't wait to check it out.

Wonderful shot of a species i still haven't had the pleasure of meeting.
I love the wintery feel of the shot, perfect for such a cold weather friend.
I might be tempted to take out the falling snow, although it doesn't distract much at all.

Just beautiful. Its got it all! I admire your dedication. I was out in the snow yesterday and it was in the 20's. Balmy compared to your conditions, yet it still took me a while to warm up after being out for an hour or so...

A beautiful capture with great detail, color and setting. Hats off to you and the finch for tolerating the weather, and setting up a perch in such conditions. I've got your cd and highly recommend it. I have a question about composition with this shot. The perch is taking a lot of space and to me it borders on dominating the shot. Let us in on your thinking about how you cropped it. Thanks in advance!

    Hey David,

The perch with the snow and the falling snow just speaks to the habitat of this high altitude species. I felt guilty cropping it out (I did try) :-) I have many frames that showcase the detail of the bird in all it's glory, but I find that there are times when the bird smaller in the frame is warranted. The scene is part of the image and tells the story of the Finch.

I also had a hard time with a closer crop as I pulled in the LL corner, the perch became lower in the frame and was just too uncomfortable for me, if that makes and sense ;-)

    Thanks for the great question.
