I noticed that I could get really close to the birds while shooting inside a car but find that bean bags and cloth to be an unsafe solution. So my question is how does the Kirk solution rate? Is it that good and are there competing products to this type of product?

Works well, but you need to mount a tripod head on it. I've used it with a wimberly, a ball head and ball head+sidekick.
See enclosed a link to a brand new Windowmount, I discovered this by coincidence on a Dutch website, contacted an English distributor who is selling them now. Very stable. lightweight and easy to transport as well.
Hi Pao,
When you state unsafe I believe it's due to the not attached gear. True, but a good beanbag is the steadier solution.
I have and use the window mount by Kirk. Very well made and sturdy. It doesn’t adapt well to all windows or cars, and it’s hard to mount a flash. Big pro is you can drive (slowly) with the gear prepared. I always use it with a gimbal. I have not used any other similar competitor, but it seams to me the Kirk mount being the winner.
I built my own using wood, and it mounts with the window completely down (eliminating any chance of window breakage, remember the edge of the glass is its weakest point.) and its steadier than most tripods. I can mount it and be shooting in less then 10 seconds. My Nikon 600 F4 and all its weight sits solid. I have been perfecting it for 10 years and hopefully I can eventually market it.
