    Default Black Rhino

I have been trying for years to get a semi-decent shot of black rhino. Due to the fact that they are extremely rare, hide in dense bush and are very skittish, it is quite difficult to get them to pose for a photograph. I was very happy to see mother and calf in the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve today. Due to image size constraints for BPN I had to sacrifice some quality in the image posted.

Oh this is jolly good, as you have said rare to see them unobstructed let alone with heads up.

BG is a little cluttered but what else could you expect, I might try to blur it a little.

I like the open mouth on the calf and the almost condescending expression of Mum.

Fun shot, Elmar, although it looks a little scary, especially with the 70-200! I too noticed the open mouth on the calf and thought "pretty cool." Background and surroundings look great to me and add to the shot. Kind of weird because it reminds me of where I live in Central U.S.:) I like those funny ears on these guys as well.

Great front on action image Elmar, with nice eye contact and raised head from mum.

Thanks everyone for the comments, it is much appreciated. This picture has a bit of a story. I was intensely focussing on some bee-eaters, trying to get some pictures of them. Suddenly mother and calf walked out of the bushes. No other car in sight. I don't know who was more surprised - black rhinos or me! Mother wasn't happy - she snorted and even made a charge!

    Elmar,
I like the lower angle here. This image also gives a good idea about the habitat. I liked the head on pose. Did she charge?

    Cheers,

Thanks Hilary and Sabyasachi. Yes she gave a snorting charge. Unfortunately I was so shocked and scared that I didnt manage to capture any of it.

Brilliant close up of this couple Elmar. Can imagine what you must have felt when the charge came. Thanks for sharing and well done for your capture.
