    Default Photographing at the beach

This image is from the past winter and it was made by my good friend and fellow birder/photographer Juanma Delgado in a great day that we spend in the beach with the gull. I was testing the 500VR lens of another good friend, Pepe Reigada, and that was the day that I felt in love with that lens and decided to sold my 300Vr and go for this big chunck of glass.

Here I am shoting a kittiwake that was resting on the sand while my friend decided to take this portrait of me in action. As you can see, I had one eye on the viewfinder and the other one was scanning the surroundings in the search for more subjects to photograph :D

One of the best birding days we have had in a long, long time.

Nice idea to bring a shorter lens, your friend must have been next to the kittiwake. :)

he was shooting a 100-400, a lens that I would love to see in the Nikon lineup BTW, and the kittiwakes were really tame, in fact they were so tired after fighting with the storm in the middle of the Atlantic sea and with such a poor body condition that a lot of people went to the beach to bring food to the birds.

That was very kind to bring them food, little fish I guess? This only happens here if a rare gull such as an Ivory Gull shows up somewhere.

    Nikon has its 100-400, and it's called 80-400 f4.5-5.6 D ED VR.

Desmond, I have been using the 80-400VR for a couple of years and instead of the fact that building quality and design are IMO better than the 100-400, the AF speed of the Canon is, by far, much better for action. Optical quality is on par. I have used both lenses and there is no comparison between them if you are shoting action :)
Today I am using a 70-300VR lens that I am really happy with. Not in the same league of the 80-400 in building quality but, surprisingly, much better AF performance, specially considering the low price of the 70-300.

Harshad, rumours are vaporware until Nikon make an anouncement but I would love to have that lens for sure ;)

I love to see these shots of photographers with their big glass. Before I purchased a 500/4 these photos always helped me to understand how these lenses were used in different settings. Thanks.

Nice shot of you in action Juan! Big glass is still on my wish list for sure... Bet you are getting some great images with it.

Ooops, I wrote "gull" but, in fact there were about 3.000 kittiwakes on the beach!!!

Gus, you are going to love the new lens ;)

Roman I was thinking is something smaller than the 300-800... more handholdable :D

Cool image, Juan. The 500 is amazing glass - my feelings of guilt after spending the money evaporated when I saw the first images.
