I photographed this Surf Scoter at Barnegat Light a few days ago. Most of the time, sea ducks don't get very close to the shore but I got really lucky that day.

Love the head turn and especially the visible feet. The whites look as if they could use a nice Linear Burn.

Thanks, Artie! I toned down the whites to the 230-240 range, I'll play around to see what it looks like, this is where Viveza comes in quite handy.

Nice to have one come in close for you! I like the pano crop, and love the trailing foot and small splash at its' tip. Excellent HA.

Exposure nightmare to be sure! Great head angle and eye contact. Like the pano crop and the bright orange foot. Whites look bright but controlled on my monitor.

Nice pose and head angle. This is a tough bird to expose.
I think the blacks around the head and breast are a bit too dark on my monitor.
Maybe using a flash would have helped opening up those tones.

We need to remember that we are looking at compressed JPEGs here. When JPEGs are created, contrast is increased. The blacks get blacker and the whites get whiter. All the while the optimized TIFF looks and is great with good detail evident in both the BLACKs and the WHITEs.

The design in the bill of this duck species is like a litle piece of modern art. Amazing combination of colors and forms! Pano crop works fine here and the pose is great. I like the action of swiming and the fact that the reds legs are visible. A very nice touch of color to this image.

Luis, thanks for your suggestions. The blacks on the chest are in the 20-30 range. If you open them more in PS, the plumage looks washed out quickly. I photographed this bird on a sunny afternoon with the sun behind me.
