I have tried to find any kind of info with regards to the above but havent found anything so far. Can someone tell me if there is any difference in AF speed, especially with regards to bif? I would expect that the 7D with its many AF configuration could be better suited but then i could be wrong!

While the camera processing certainly sets some limits on AF speed, a major factor is also the lens. So I really don't think you can say which body is faster. You really need to compare a body+lens combination. I've never seen independent quantitative testing of AF speed so different systems could be compared.
Thanks Roger, yes of course that is an important factor. As a bird photographer, i use a 500. So if anyone has used both combinations: D300 (s) and Nikon 500VR versus EOS 7D with Canon 500IS, i would really appreciate any information.

When I tried a MkIII it was faster to grab focus than anything I had ever used.
When I looked at focus integrity however, my D300 was better.
The D300s focus speed can handle pretty much anything I ask it to do. I have only tried a 7D with a 500IS at my dealers in the parking lot and the feeling without having any real world use on the 7D was that they were the same relative to initial acquisition speed.
I haven't personally used the D300s, but I've photographed side by side with Jim Salywoda (I with a 7D and he with a D300s). We were both typically using a 600 with a 1.4x. I think our results were very similar in terms of keepers, and that's really the bottom line here IMO.
