    Default Red-shouldered Hawk landing

    Oceola County, FL | February 20, 5:21pm |
    Canon Rebel XT | Canon 500mm f4 IS | 1/2500 f4 hh | ISO 200

It's amazing what you can do in FL even with low end cameras if you have good locations and technique.

Great wing position, BG and out-reaching talons. Well done!

I might be a dancing if I had made that capture. Well done IMHO.

    Good to see it.

Great exposure of a well lit subject and BG. The landing pose is awesome but I wish there was a hint of a perch or something fo it to land on. BTW, I enjoyed your show Monday at the MPEG meeting.

Hi Matthew, This is pretty cool. Great pose with nice wing position, giving us a good view of the underside of the wing. As mentioned above the view of the talons is also very nice. I also think the the prey is a plus (at least that is what I assume is in the beak). Nice soft background with pleasing color. May I suggest that lightening the eye a little might be worth a try. Thanks for sharing.

Every image I've seen of this bird there is no detail in eye...I doubt any can be pulled out of it...they're basically black.

Great wing position, details and concentration on the Hawk. One of my better Eagle in-flights came from my Rebel XT..at 3 1/2 fps it makes you choose what shot you take which I think helps in the long run.

Killer wing and talon position. EXP and sharpness perfect. Was the bird attracted to the perch in any way?

Thanks Artie. Nothing fancy here. I just followed this guy along the road as he sat on fence posts looking for grasshoppers, then my best shots were when he would fly back up to the posts.

ps for the folks not inclined to look, here's what it says: Unfortunately I am seeing way too many "Great shot" and "I love this image" posts. At BPN we strive to provide honest critiques done gently. If you think that an image is great please let us know what it is about the image you love, what the strong points are, what makes it dramatic or interesting or pleasing.

Excellently visualized and executed. The bug is a bonus. For me though when the talons are in this position I like to see either the potential prey or at least a hint of the point of landing.

Matthew you have some of the best red shoulder shots I at least have ever seen. And I have always been amazed at what you could get out of that rebel of yours. Rather intimidating to contemplate what you could do with more capable gear. How's your newest venture working out?

I hate to beat a dead horse but it ain't the camera and it ain't the lens.... :) Instead of looking at what camera someone is using it might be best to look between their ears, at their hearts, and inside their souls. (Matthew: in case you are not paying attention, I just gave you a big compliment :)

this is a brillient image and "good locations and technique" are most important factors in making great images like this.
