Dup layer, apply Fractalius to top layer, merge mode overlay. Works especially well with fluffed up feathers, like here.

Bill, This is way cool! I love the effect on the fluffed up feathers. Great looking BG. Is that water at the base? I love the color. Beautiful work. Just a small white smudge by the tip of the bill. I may have to break down and by this program.:)

Thanks Denise. I went and removed the smudge, and reposted over the 1st one. Yes it is water, and the bird is standing on the bank. Very overcast and it was sprinkling, thus ISO 1250 was necessary. regards~Bill

Bill, I really like the simplicity here - bird and water and no interfering objects. The subtle use of Fractalius looks great. It does really work well with the puffed up feathers.

I like this one a lot Bill. The effect is well controlled and I just love the colors! Very good choice of image for this effect, it works really well here.

this is wonderful! You started with a great comp, and I really like the effects on the long plumes from the fract. Really pleasing colors as well :)
