I like the angle, eye contact and BG and would try to lighten the far wing a bit and tone down the highlights. Can you see in the original what is sticking out behind the leg? It looks like a little branch.

Great - for all the reasons mentioned above. I think the two-toned wings add interest but agree that the far one could maybe be lightened a bit. Maybe the white flank could be toned down.

showing my ignorance here. I don't know what is sticking out from behind leg. Attached this is a 100% crop. It's on both sides

I would not lighten the back wing too much - I like the contrast. Greta image of a hard bird to capture - at least around here.
I dl your image and did see the highlights too hot in a few place. When I have a full size tiffs all set in PS, with no blown highlights, I often get a few blown highlights when I downsize the image to 800 pixels wide. So, I have to reduce the highlights in this reduced size. Perhaps that is what happened to you?

Excellent BG and nice near wing position and eye contact, I wish the beak had not merged with under the wing shadow. The twigs that are sticking out are typical of harriers, the pick them up when hunting and nesting on the ground and for some reason they can't or don't care to shake them off.

You have a beauty here, Phil! I agree with working on those few hot white pixels as the image is completely worthy of it. :)
