    Default Canon 100-400 vs 70-200 2.8 +2X

Does anyone have experience with these lenses on a 40D body. I currently have the 100-400 and a friend purchased the 70-200 2.8 2X combo and he seems to be having some sharpness issues. Is this a bad combination or poor technique? I'm sure some pros here have experience and will be able to give input. Thanks, Maurice

Are you using the Canon 2x TC or another brand? I've seen excellent results with the non-IS f/2.8 version lens and the Canon 2x TC. The IS version suffers a little from CA at the edges, as does the Canon 2x and I'm sure the results are less than stellar wide open at 400mm. You might try stopping down to f/8 or 11 to see if it gets any better.

The non-IS version is possibly the sharpest zoom Canon has ever made and it performs quite well with both the Canon 1.4x and 2x TC. However, with the 2x you end up at f/5.6 and I suspect it might just equal or exceed the IQ of the Canon 100~400mm lens at 400mm. Most 100~400mm zooms aren't performing at their best at 400mm. IQ drops off past 400mm and in many cases quite noticeably. The best solution at this range is the 400mm f/5.6 as it out performs all other Canon 400mm lenses except the DO version. However, for the price the 400mm DO should be a top performer.

It's a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS and Canon x2 II, just seems to be soft. My 100-400 is much sharper than this combo.

No way that the 70-200 could be like the 100-400! look att the link below!

I remember Artie using the 70-200 f4 IS with 1.4x on the 40D and getting some excellent images. So the 2x is junk on this combination?

I have both of these and will never try putting the 2x on the 70-200 again. My 100-400 is much sharper wide open than the 70-200 with 2x. Occasionally I will put the 1.4x and it handles that fairly well.

It was my buddy that bought the lens combo and he is a very good photographer so I didn't think it was the user.
