Beautiful shot -- nice interesting foreground and very appropriate background for a calf. B and W a nice choice.

Nicely done Peter. Like the conversion. Interesting too, how the mother is so relaxed as normally, I would expect her body to be between you and the calf. Well done.

I agree that having mother as the background has helped in reducing distracting backgrounds. It also gives a sense of scale. Thanks for sharing.

    Peter,

This works very well for me!
I think that B&W might be the anwswer to the otherwise relatively colour free state of Rhinos, unless covered in good coloured mud or dust.

I like this cyan sepia B&W conversion Peter and the look this Rhino is giving you.

The composition works well for me with the hulking mom as the BG.

    I like the B&W treatment.

The cool B/W treatment provides a nice contrast between the lighter calf and darker mother. Also like the detail in the eye.

nice one Peter - I dig baby photos against a backdrop of the mother, especially if it's just skin.
would love to pick your brain regarding your B&W conversions...which tones do you tweak to get a certain feel?

thanks everyone for comments , advice as always appreciated.
Dave agree with your observation about the mother normally keeping herself between her young and a third party... I always try and keep outside of their comfort zone and let them get use to me before I begin to shoot.. she relaxed but kept her distance

Marc , I used a red filter , and selenium tone on image...

Morkel , regarding Digital b@W conversion I still have a long way to go...
best advice I can give regarding B@W conversions is ...do not fall in to the trap of its not a ''good colour image'' or the ''whites are blown ''or its ''harsh light'' so therefor it will make a good B@W as I often read when people post a b@w image.

When I post a B@W image most of the time it was captured with the idea of it being a B@W image and not a colour one... so I am thinking of textures, tones, contrast etc. and when I convert an image its more of a mood thing with me... one of the problems of being irish , very moody... and I like my B@W images to be same..

So my advice is to capture an image with B@W image as the final product. And you will fine that conversion will be an easier and more successful process .. sorry I could not give you more precise advice.
