Default canon wide angle lens suggestion??

    Happy Holidays to all!
I'm looking for suggestions on which canon lens to have in the bag, for wide angle use! My current camera bodies are canon 50d, and 7d, looking towards next year acquiring a full frame body as well.I currently shoot mostly birds, and wildlife, however landscape is another awesome discipline as well.
    TIA

I don't know how wide you want to go but I would suggest the Canon 16-35. It is a very good lens and will work very well on a full frame sensor and is very usable on the bodies you have now. You can go wider now but most of them will not work on FF bodies.

Get either the 17-40 (slow) or 16-35 (fast) lens. the Canon 10-22 will fit your 50d & 7d but not a full frame.

The lens is great on cropped bodies, but is a little soft in the corners when wide-open with a full frame body.

    I have the 17-40 also and I have not used it once since I got the 16-35. Must say the 16-35 is 1.4 lb (635g), Length 3.8" (97mm), Diameter 3.3" (83.5mm) vs 17.5 oz (500g), L 4.4" (112mm), W 3.5" (88mm.The 16-36 also uses a larger filter, 82 mm vs 77mm.

Your filter has to be the slim type or else you well get vignetting at the corners when you stop down.

If you're referring to my post in the other thread, two different bodies. You asked about how the 16~35 mm f/2.8 did on the 50D and 7D. The 16~35mm is a good, maybe great lens depending on the subject matter and how the lens is used. Like any lens it does have it's deficiencies and it is probably the best WA Canon has ever made.

I went into more depth on my experiences with various WA Canon lenses in the other thread because more questions were specifically asked. I think the 16~35mm has a limited range in which it performs well on a FF body, namely 16mm to 24mm and stopped down to f/8 or f/11. That is how I shoot my landscapes on a FF and for me it works great. Your mileage may vary.

On a crop body most of the major lens defects are cropped away and it performs well through most of the range, though it is weak out near 35mm. This is typical of all zooms as there are always compromises in the design when we ask a zoom to do many things, such as wide zoom range, fast speed, etc. The 17~40mm has too many issues for me to recommend it for someone even contemplating FF bodies.

Cropped body is not the same as FF, cropped sees a small center portion of the image circle therefore many issues like corner softness, vignetting, border chromatic aberrations and distortion are not visible on a cropped camera. I agree with Jeff that all of these lenses perform very good on cropped bodies, but they are not wide anymore.
