    Default Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Juvenile)

    Hi all,

It's cold here now and I find myself missing the hummers of summer... So I brought out this shot from late July to post tonight.
He's a juvie who was just beginning to get his gorget feathers so we don't really see any ruby color yet. But still I like his cocky pose and the clarity of the shot, and I'd like to know what you all think of it.

Thanks for looking and any comments you might offer,

Close in your face image. Good face image , but almost too much closeness .
    Great background. Nice feather detail.

Nice close-up, but as Charles says perhaps TOO close:). Interesting pose, Ilike it. I wish the upper mandible wasn't so bright, and I believe some eye doctor work to improve the pupil/iris separation would be a good thing.

    Kenn:

Another vote for a slightly looser crop. Do agree about the upper mandible brightness as well.
    Good advice already given.

    His attitude comes through well!

Thanks Charles, Daniel, Randy and Harshad for your feedback.

This shot was taken close... a bit less than 4ft I think, but there was some canvas left all around before my original crop. I was thinking a horizontal because of the sideways (profile) HA I guess. Anyway, I thot the close crop kinda worked with the "in your face" pose, and there was nothing else of interest really in the rest of the frame cropped away.
Daniel, I do see the funky effect of the reflections in the lower half of the eye. I have examined dozens of other hummer images (my own and others), and can't find a single shot where there's any distinctly recognizable pupil. Hummingbird eyes are very dark and their pupils don't really seem to show. So I've just cleaned up the reflections a bit and I guess this has helped some. I also toned down the broad highlight on the upper beak (again... ha believe it or not I had already done that some in the original post ;))

So here's the repost... backed off a little and made vertical. Better?

    hmmmm... maybe.

    Thanks again for your comments,

    Kenn

I'd vote for the repost ... beautiful image and I love the little head tilt.
