Default Barn Swallow In Low Light

Very cold and damp this particular morning which caused hundreds of bar, tree, and rough wing swallows to perch near a beaver pond where I photograph near home.

    Nikon D2Xs, 500 f4D, TC14EII, ISO 250, F8, 1/40, CW metering, -1.3 EV, natural light

OK, here comes the obvious question: why only ISO 250 with such low light and SS? Although the image looks good and (very) sharp here you'd be giving yourself more chances at sharp keepers with higher SS...

Anyways, very nice image. Good pose, with excellent HA. Cool perch, I love the thorns. I may explore darkening some of the lighter areas on it, especially in LRC. Good BG too, and I also like the natural overcast light.

ps , I think it was wise choice to chose ISO 250 on D2X

Gorgeous image, Jim. I just love these guys - so iridescent. I like to shoot low ISO when going for perched birds. Always makes such a buttery background and sharp image with little post processing. I love the color on this one especially and the perch is great too.

    Daniel...

To answer your question, it's kind of a 2 fold response.

    A) I was trying to keep the noise down and the D2 series got noisy above ISO 500....

    B) I also screwed up :)

    Jim:

The perch is great, with interest and leading line right to the subject. Do agree with Daniel about some slight tweaking of its brightness. My personal take would be a gradual fade from the front to back, to keep our attention from following the perch right out of the frame, but a minor point.

I know its the natural catchlight, but I might try a version with it not quite so bright.

    Lovely shot overall.

Jim, Beautiful details and sharpness. I like the curved perch. I agree w/ Randy regarding the eye as it does look natural but maybe just a tad lighter. Nice to hear that a pro like yourself can still screw-up. :);)Even though the image is still bang on.
