Forest Kingfisher (Todiramphus macleayii) Yellow Waters Kakadu NP Australia
Canon EOS 40D Lens 100-400mm L IS USM at 400mm ISO 640 F5.6 1/1000 fill flash 29 August 2009
Taken on Yellow Waters Boat trip at Cooinda, Kakadu NP. Would have been better to have taken the second trip whereas we took the sunrise trip but too much of the time was taken awaiting sunrise..the second trip would have enabled more avian images and wildlife in general with more light to take them. This image was taken as we cruised slowly past the bird so it was a grab shot...hence messy background. Magic birds all the kingfishers wish I could have been in an individual boat and then you could spent all day ( or even a few days!!) just stopping..then stopping ..then stopping..taking images all the time !! Having said that the rangers and crew were very obliging but still it would be better to hire a boat for 3 or 4 people .
Best regards
Rod Warnock
Great capture nonetheless Rod. Nice pose, exp & color, would like a touch more light on the head & eye.
It's a magic spot up there at Yellow waters, have been up there a few times fishing for Barra.
Next time a smaller private boat for sure.;)
I like this a lot Rod! You captured the colours beautifully! Sharpness and detail look good to me as well. Bird stands out beautifully against the BG. Just a slight head turn tp put this over the top IMO.
Rod, this is really nice -- the whites are so well managed with the hugely contrasting tones of blue. I think a bit more light on the head would have really perfected it,
Beautiful kingfishers you got 'down there'. I also like the setting and BG and agree that a slight head turn toward you would have made it even stronger. Do you have one in this series with the bird looking at you?
