Dave, Thanks for a great image to play with!

    Here's my step by step:
    1. Ran several versions of DAP and chose the two I liked best - Watercolor for the BG and Camille for the dove.
    2. I layered the watercolor version over the Camille version and painted on a mask to reveal the Camille dove back in at about 40 t0 50 %. Then I flattened this.
    3. Then I resized Dave's original to match the DAP sizes and layered the DAP combo over Dave's original. I painted on a mask to reveal the catchlight and the bit of blue around the eye that just has to be in a Mourning Dove's eye. I flattened again.
    4. Next I added some canvas at the bottom and with Clone tool, redid the tail that the Watercolor filter chopped off when it put the white border around.
    5. I save in sRGB color space which made it appear too yellow, so I added a Hue/Sat layer and tweaked the Hue to -6 to add back some warmth.

thanks Patti, this is a verrrry nice rendering and a solid workflow.
BG and edge work are well rendered too.
When you finish DAP process, save as "special/layered .psd", that gives you the DAP layered over the original.
Maybe you already know this, but just in case you did not

    Nice image and application, Patti.

Only suggestion I would have is to maybe use a slight outline from Photoshop to highline the feathers and perch features. But ...

    Your image ... your vision.

Patti, Nice work and I like the color tones. I might crop the bottom white piece out. Beautiful Bg and looks just like a painting!

    Thanks all.
Dave, I didn't know that, so thanks because I usually want to paint back something from the original.
Mark, Not sure I know how to do that, but I will give it a try.
Denise, I meant to crop off that excess canvas and forgot. Oops.

    Patti,

I was thinking of Poster Edge or Ink Outline filters. If you adjust the settings, you can get a finer outline added to the image. Not sure if that would be your vision, but just a suggestion for another one. Nice image as is otherwise.

    Mark,

I tried out the filters you suggested. Ink Outline seemed pretty harsh to me. I couldn't tame it down. But, I liked Poster Edges. I duped the layer, ran PE and then changed the opacity to around 60% (I think). The feather edges are better defined, but the painting look is still there. I like it! Thanks for the suggestion Mark. It's always fun to play with something new.

Oh, and I cropped off the extra white canvas and added more canvas to the top.

Patti, They are both appealing. I like the added canvas up top. Nicely done.

Agree they are both nice Patti, the outline is just another vision. I find that usually only one of the two options works for the image, but try both just to see what happens. I also like run the outline filters with the Dry Brush filter, either before or after the Dry Brush filter, to see what effect that has on the image. Just a FYI should you wish to try it someday.
