I used to work for Apple and while I really like Aperture (employees get a free copy), I paid for LR and that's what I use on a daily basis. I can think of really only one reason to pick aperture over LR and that is if you're near an Apple Retail Store. Apple offers in-store tutoring on a yearly basis for a really low price ($100 a year?). It's a great way to get tutoring and learn the software. They even help you in-store, get your files into Aperture etc. It's something to consider if all this seems intimidating.
