    Default Northern Hawk Owl

Still waiting for the snowy this year, here's a picture taken last February which I'm quite happy with! . After a couple of hours searching for this owl, I finally saw it quite far. Getting ready to add my TC2X, it starts to fly in my direction. Tripod on the ground, I scrolled fast to F5.6 and shoot in continuous mode about 8-10 shots not knowing that it has a prey. Here's one photo of the sequence where I removed a few dark spots in the snow using Photoshop Element.

I can see why you are happy with this image, I would be happy too if this is mine. Love the sharpness, the details, the wing position, the flying angle and the exposure. Even the huge prey looks good, excellent job. Since you already taken care of some dark spot might consider removing another one in top right hand corner. Just wish that the shadow on the head wasn't there.

Excellent capture Lise Love the prey (size/condition/position) and wing position.

Did well with the exposure and image is sharp, would do a levels adjustment to set the white point .. will re post with the adjustment and slight lightening of the head area. Like it a lot and only wish it was mine !!!!

    Hi Alfred,

I really like the adjustements you made, i will go back in Capture NX2 to read more about the white point! As the snow is already here now, I better hurry!!!! :)

Haven't used NX2 for a while since I'm back to Canon but can make the adjustment in PE Just go to levels and hold the alt(option on Mac) down and move the right slider to the left. As you move all turns dark, keep moving until you see light areas then back down a little. Can do the same for the right side (darks)

Other than that just masked the head and lighten just a bit !!! Good luck with the owls !!!

Hi lise - Excellent - love the prey and flight position. AL'S repost looks good - you can also set the black/white point in Photoshop.
Bring up a levels adjustment and hold down ALT as you drag the sliders - you will see the image go white and things start to appear as you move the sliders - move them back just a tad until you are just on the verge of them appearing.

Throwing down the challenge here - definite IOTW candidate.
    Well done!

    Hi Lise,
This is an excellent composition and capture...Mr. Forns' repost puts it over the top with the slight adjustments...looking forward to your next one...
