The sphere was on the top of a pole by the side of the road; seemed like an interesting compositional element that could be emphasized by removing the distraction of color.

Bill, Nice idea to remove the color and have it less distracting. I like the curved lines of the perch and feel it adds some interest.You could also crop up to the center of the globe to emphasis the Kestrel more, but I personally like the inclusion of the entire sphere. I might a add a hint of contrast to the bird if it were mine. Slight halo noted. I love the effect on the feet and feathers. Nicely done.
I agree with Denise about more contrast on the bird and maybe a touch more sharpening as well. Love the spherical perch (not your everyday find!) but I'd darken the bottom edge where it lightens up right at the frame line.
