HI Still fairly new on this forum hoping to learn a lot but I have been watching and reading here for 6 months.
I currently have a 40D
Glass. Canon 70-200 F2.8, Canon 50 1.8, Sigma 150 2.8 macro, Sigma 150-500 OS. Sigma 10-20 & Buying a Canon 24-105 F4
I have only been shooting for a year and am amazed at how little I still know after 1 year of intensive shooting and research.
I like to Shoot Mainly Wildlife & Birds but am starting to like Landscape and Macro much more also.
I want a second body that will be my primary. Looking at the 7D or a MKIII Used.
Although I am always looking for more reach I am thinking the 1.3x of the Mk III may also yield better landscape and macro. I know I am still below par for the 40 D even but want this next body so I can grow into both.
Video is not important to me I Understand the decision is ultimately mine but I would love your wealth of knowledge and opinions if you have shot both cameras which way you would go.
IMO, 1DIII is neither better at landscape nor macro. There is no real super WA lens for 1DIII, remember your Sigma 10-20 is for 1.6x cropped body only. For macro, you want as many pixel as possible. The advantages of 1DIII over 7D are more rugged body, superior IQ at pixel level, and better high ISO performance. I think you will be happier with 7D.
I would get a 1D Mark III simply because of the better high ISO performance and image quality in general. If you have trouble getting close to your subjects, the 7D might be good.
Image quality trumps everything else in my book. 7D does provide much high pixel density which is useful for additional cropping capability, but IQ from the Mark3 is superior. I also own a 40D and am planning to purchase a used Mark3 next Spring as the prices drop after the MarkIV is released. Another consideration is whether you favor the heavier pro body or not. I currently also use the MarkIIn and prefer the feel of the 1D body style vs. the smaller lighter bodies.
I guess it all depends on your own style of photography Steve. The 7d is much lighter and its 1.6x crop factor is great for telephoto wildlife photography. If you want to focus on landscapes then maybe you should consider a full frame model such as the Canon 5D.
In many ways the 7D follows on the 40D series (apart from its video capability) so you will find the camera very familiar, though it does use a different battery.
If you do move from 40D to 7D you will be very pleased with the quality and improved ISO performance, though obviously not quite up to Mk III levels.
Well Decision Made. I wnet to a Local Store that had a Canon Rep in with demo units. I held and took several shots with 7D and the 1D mk III.
I will be getting a Mk III shortly. The ergonomics, build quality and general feel of the camera plus lots of looking at images on the web made by both cameras has sealed the deal for me. Now I just need to keep learning so I can try to make shots worthy of the equipment.
Thanks for all the advice.
