Shot in Texas this past spring. I would have loved to get him on top of the log and captured his feet.
Nikon D300,500mm,F/8,1/640,-1/3 comp, 800 iso,tripod mtd...
fantastic shot Dave, love the detail, especially since i've only ever seen them from a distance.
BG is sweet, getting the foot in the shot would have been optimal of course but we take what we are given sometimes.
Thanks for sharing.
At first I would have said it was soft but I'm not convinced that it sinmply isn't the plumage type and pattern as the head looks sharp?
As far as the crop goes, typically I would have given more room to the left and above the head BUT...since the body of the subject kinda mimics the upward curve of the log as it does, I kinda like it as is :)
Some won't like the feet missing but it looks OK to me.
Dave, Beautiful feather pattern on the bird. I especially like the color tones. The complimentary BG and the perch are pleasing. I do wish for a slight head turn, but this is such a beautiful bird the main attraction is it's plumage. Nicely done.
I'm with Jim, detecting some type of softness? Was there much of a crop applied? Maybe a sharpening issue? Just not sure, maybe some others will chime in.
That said, I surely do like your subject, his striding pose and his perky little head feathers.
Thanks Denise..
Grace, Very little crop.I would say about 10%. I have other images of the bird type(also in different locations) and they all have that little bit of softness in the feathers. I'm thinking thats the way they photograph...
Gamebirds are quite stunning and this is a beautiful example. Colours work beautifully. Personally I would prefer a little more room all round but would be very happy to have this on my files.
