Default White tail buck in habitat

I've got lots of images of bucks in the open, but I keep being drawn to this shot. I tracked him through the woods and moved in front of him to get him passing by and shooting through the trees and brush.

Canon 7D with EF 400mm f5.6L at ISO 2000 with +2/3EV and aperture priority at f/6.3 resulting in 1/1250-sec. Overcast conditions, processed with DPP, only adjusting light level and crop.

Hi David I am surprised you do not use PS after DPP just for a little tweaking.

Can you tell me, if you go back into your RAW file in DPP, click on the edit window, then click on the RAW button. Firstly, are the corners of your histogram touching both the L & R hand corners on the base line? I bet they aren't :-) If not, move the bars in towards the 'histogram' on both sides, thus reducing the overall width of your histogram, but don't touch, just then slightly back off, does that make sense? Does the image look better? If so, now go back to the RGB button and amend accordingly.

Let me know how you get on.

I don't have DPP here at the office, so I'll try to get to it tonight, or it may be tomorrow.

I actually much prefer DxO's Optics Pro, but the module for the 7D didn't come out until today. I'll also reprocess with DPP to see what I think. Thanks for the suggestions.

OK Dave. DPP is dedicated to Canon, therefore it really does work much better than the majority of RAW converters, trust me :-) Download it direct from Canon website, then follow the instructions to install.

Sorry if I inadvertently confused you Steve, I DO own DPP and have it installed on my computers at home, but I don't have it on my office computer.

I'll be interested to see how DPP stands up against DxO's Optics Pro with my 7D. I think that DxO actually does a better job with my 5D MkII. I'll do some comparisons as I use DxO to reprocess the images that I processed originally on DPP.

Hi David, I love whitetail images and your buck peeking throught the branches looks great.
My favourite images are the ones I worked the hardest for.

    Cheers,

Following Steve's suggestions I reprocessed in DPP. I think it resulted in significant improvement. See for yourself:
