It was a real treat and a stroke of luck to find this Clark's Grebe (left) and Western Grebe (right) frolicking together @ Bosque. You can really see the differences between the two when they are side-by-side. The Clark's has an orange bill vs. the yellow bill of the Western. The black cap doesn't extend to the eye on the Clark's but does on the Western. In this capture, one looks larger but they are normally about the same size.

Pretty amazing stuff!! Exposure looks spot on to me. Thought a more conventional 2:3 crop would be nice - hope you don't mind the repost.

Hi Marina - This is a beautiful shot and I was going to suggest tightening it up a bit and voila! -- I scrolled down to find a repost that makes beautiful shot even better. Love the eyes and the glassy water.

Marina lovely image and thanks for the ID lesson. I've not seen either of these species before.

A great capture and good for you to get it. Both birds have nice and sharp features. I like the composition and crop works for me. Dave

Thanks for the ids Marina. :) I got that pair Friday morning - all I knew was that they were not the grebes we see on the west coast.

Marina....very cool to get them like this in a frame. Great ID lesson and them looking in opposite directions makes it very special. Loves the ripples a lot...among all the other things. Liked the repost with the center placement. Thx for sharing.

Hi Marina. What's not to like here? Great light, two good head angles, and both birds sharp - plus getting two species together. I also like the head-to-tail poses. Well done.

Good catch and thanks for explanation. Both seemed the same till I read your post. Plenty sharp and their eyes are amazing.

The image was no stroke of luck, a masterful presentation. These two birds swam in never ending circles mesmerized by the charms of photographers Marina Scarr and Amy Marques.
