Default Bull Ele bath time! B&W

The light here was still somewhat harsh at 4.00pm, when I captured this bull Elephant enjoying himself at one of the many waterholes in Savuti, hence the conversion to B&W.
Would have liked a little more room all round, was back as far as I could go in our vehicle.
    Savuti, Botswana Sept 09.

    C & C most welcome

Have included the color version for comparison.

    Marc,
You needed your 200-400, but never mind.
Do Nikon have something similar to the 28-300?
Back to the image the b&w is more striking but I also like the colour version a difficult choice?

Hi Marc, nice to see something different.

I prefer the B/W version, but perhaps a little more 'selective' USM & contrast to give it a bit more punch. I might also be tempted to reduce the space on the r/h side and clone out the two black rocks in the water, but this is only a personal view.

BTW have you seen Beverly Joubert work? Might be tempted to play with the B/W image in PS with 'variations' under the adjust menu, but click on slider to move it to FINE.

    cheers

like the B&W most, and ditto Ken you needed that 200-400 :)
lovely moment and the close crop does work to pull the viewer into the action.

would love to see what the result of Steve's suggestions look like.

Marc, I like both versions, hard to tell which is "best"- I think I lean towards the coloured version. Steve's suggestions will be interesting to see.
I like your (forced:)) use of the 500mm, nice up-close shot of the spray and flapping ear.
Those Savute waterholes are lots of fun. My last visit was quite a few years ago, all on film. Do you have any cute baby ele shots when they come rushing to the water late afternoon?

Guys, I am happy to post something up, but not sure if it's quite right, but would like Marc's approval first.

Steve - normally most BPN members have no qualms if you reply to this thread and attach a version showing your suggestions (as opposed to posting a new thread). I think Marc will be fine with it but always better (and more polite) to wait for the "okay" :)

B&W is my favorite -- very intense, dramatic image! Wow!

Super shot Marc. Love the conversion and the spray and angle of view all add nicely.

    Hi Marc

Not sure if this works? Using a file with most of the info stripped out is not ideal, LOL, but it might show the train of thought, plus viewed on different monitors might not be great either? Will delete if you think fit.

    cheers

Looks good Steve, the increased selective USM has improved the contrast and along with the slight sepia tone is a definite winner!
Thanks for taking the time on this image. I'll now have another look at the original again.

Well if it has proved to be 'food for thought' then I am happy Marc. If possible would like to see more room on the l/h side. If you have any questions just PM me.
