I often use my arm. Of course this won't work if you need your left hand for focus or zoom. And I do a lot of in vehicle photography.

I use a large bean bag, a Badger, (a South African ± equivalent of the BLUBB) together with a Badger Panning Mount (uses a Swiss-Arca quick release) and perhaps one extra normal bean bag (a large cloth bank cash-bag filled with beans).

The Badger bean bag slips over the open car window - it is shaped like a large tooth with two roots - one root on each side of the door (it holds about 2 kg of beans). Then the Badger panning mount either sits on top of this or on top of the extra bean bag - depending on the height/elevation you need for the camera subject.

The panning mount gives smooth panning and the bean bags give good stability. I would recommend that you still keep your lens image stabiliser on and, of course, the bean bags require that you, the photographer, make up the last part of the stabilising system by holding the camera down into the bean bag.

A lot of my images are taken from a vehicle . The bean bag works well in certain situations. I too have a blubb.But my preference is too use a car mount from ODP here in SA.. and a wimberely head. The range and the ease of movement is far greater and ideal for moving subjects.I fine that been able adjust height quickly invaluable.

Tony the panning head is basically a shaped metal stand with a panning mount (your lens will need a lens plate) that rests on a beanbag and allows an easy side to side panning movement. It works very well in the field and is less cumbersome than some of the fixed door-mount systems available.

I vote for this too.

I also use a Kirk window mount with a RRS BH55 ball head.
