These geese are congregating at the mouth of Canoe Pass, one of the outlets of the Fraser River, Vancouver BC. There are other flocks of similiar or larger size at other locations at the mouth of the river. We have had some freezing temps. and there is ice on the immediate foreshore, so the birds seem to be gathered closer together than normal. Goose hunters are out and about, but only the experienced ones having any luck.

Nice to see Dave. Do these birds spend the winter locally or are they moving through?

John, the little I know about them, the numbers vary through the winter. Some will stay and depending on the weather others may go varying distances south.
This year apparently was a bumper crop with upwards of 120,000 leaving Wrangel Isl. I am not sure actual numbers of birds wintering over here but there are tons of them.
Some of the birds live a suburban lifestyle. They commute into a city park or school yard for feeding which is a problem.
The hunters daily limit was upped from 5 to 10. Most of the hunters I see come home empty handed or one or two birds at most.
With the cold weather we are having right now the foreshore is ice covered so birds are rafting up where they can.
    They are quite the spectacle.
    Dave
