This is only one of two battle shots I was successful in getting this Bighorn rut and it is the better of the two. I wish I had more room at the edges, but was shooting with my 300mm prime and was happy to just not cut off a hoof. The light was getting challening and while I think I handled it ok, I wish it was better. My only other self comment is, I wish I would have opened up my aperature a little more, prob around 5.6. All comments and critiques welcome.

Kurt, it's a fantastic action photo with just 300mm, sharp and from a good angle, I also like the inclined terrain to give reference to their habitat. Just abit more of light is missing, the green and the brown can use a bit more of "vivid" color, that you can easy fix with photoshop. Bravo!

I like the comp and the way to the two rams form a "bridge". Also like the habitat. Agree with your self critique about the light, had to deal with that many times myself.

    Well scene Kurt.

Interesting that you say that Alfred, as I would say the 300 f/4 is a better lens (especially the IS version) compared to the 100-400, as it's renowned for being soft beyond 370mm+. :-)

    kind regards

I ageree Steve. That is why I bought the 300mm f/4 IS instead of the 100-400mm. I also use the 1.4 tc with it and find my photos are sharper even with the 1.4 tc than my friends 100-400 is...plus I gain 20mm more than him with a max of 420mmm.

But with that said, I think the reason Alfred suggested the 100-400 is because I barely fit them in the scene. If I had the 100-400, I could have backed off and not had the hoof so close to the edge. At least I think that is what he was saying :)

Kurt, I agree where Alfred was coming from, and having a 'fixed' lens can be a handicap at times. I think I have used my 100-400 about 5 times, probably have the original box too:-)

I wish Canon would simply bring out a 200-400mm and ditch the 100-400 which is... IMHO

    Happy shooting.

TOTALLY AGREE!!! Or even better, a 200-500 f/4 with IS weighing only 4 pounds....(I can keep dreaming right?)
