    Default Surveying the land

Taken in the Maasi Mara, one of my favourite locations.

Early in the morning we spotted this Cheetah stalking a herd of Impala and watch for almost an hour as she made he way through the talk grass, inching her way forward to with a few meters of her prey. From our original spot, to her final position we collect 18 vehicles, the last one getting too close and spooking her meal!

The two cubs hidden in the grass then came out to play, whilst Mum surveyed the land, for another meal!

Very pleasing side lit image Steve, would have preferred a landscape orientation (understanding your room for text) to take out the tree line in BG and of course a head turn would have put this over the top. Lovely pose, nice and sharp nonetheless.

Where in the Mara and what time of year Steve? I'm there late Sept next year and my one trepidation are the crowds, if you want to go there (prime time) I guess one just has to put up with them.:(

Fantastic use of side light. I like the vertical crop, even room for text ;)

    Steve,

Not sure about this but it is a nice pose. Looks like the termites have been recently busy.
Your description of the crowds in the Mara brings back memories, but to be fair it can be a little less busy if you hide away.

Marc, the time was early September, taking in the 'crossing in' too.

Ken, to hide in the Mara is a bit difficult, as any vehicle that has stopped is closely view through powerful bino's & long lenses unless you have a 'stealth jeep' LOL. There are ways to reduce your presence, but the bush telegraph is highly effective, as you know.

I like the composition with the space on top for text. It is unfortunate that there are too many tourist vehicles jostling with each other. This brings to my mind Mary McDonald's BBC honoured image of lions and tourist traffic. In most of the places the tourism pressure is enormous.

    Cheers,

I like the pose, though feel the image would look better in landscape.

That is a lot of vehicles to contend with.....looking to make it to the Mara at some point, once I venture out of my Southern Africa comfort zone.

Beautiful image, Steve, of one of everyone's favourite cat! The soft light on the face and the gaze are what fascinate me, but would have loved to see a horizontal frame.

Great pose and light! The added shadows add a little depth to the image.

This is a fantastic picture. Love the way it is balancing on the mound.
