I photographed this Northern Elephant Seal at Piedras Blancas near San Simeon, CA at sunset, two years ago next Wednesday...can't wait to get back.

Cropped from vertical image, a couple of distracting pieces of flotsam have been cloned out...I left most of the kelp and beach wrack for habitat.

Hi John, great expression, light and detail, especially at 1/60sec. If it was possible, I think a lower POV, eye to eye, filling the frame as you have it, would have been the perfect shot. As it is, it is still a good shot!

A little more depth of field from nose back would have been fine and wonder what ISO you were working.
The soft afternoon light is very nice and next time low and with this light behind you will turn a great photo into a fabulous photo. You indicate you are going back so have fun.

Thanks for pointing out I omitted the ISO, Charles...I am new to posting here...
I shot at 400...I now realize that I could have easily gone with a much higher ISO, but that was before I spent time on this wonderful forum.
Agree with you Charles and Steve that a lower viewpoint would have been better...this was my first visit to the site and I didn't realize I could go beyond the fence....had that pointed out on my last morning there. Shot this from the boardwalk which is quite elevated.
I hope to be back in January of 2010.

Even Brian Wison was never this large!

Nice shot of yet another animal I have never seen.

Certainly the closest I'll ever come to one of these guys- thanks for sharing him with us, John. I really like the close crop and the beautiful light on him.

    John,

Wonderful image with super light, exposure and detail. The comp is very compelling. Well done!

With a lower viewpoint you would lose the back of the animal. It would not necessarily be a better image, but it would be different one ;)

    Best,

    Chas

    John,
Lovely light. I like this image. I would try to avoid the gap at the top left corner. Overall, looks good. Good luck for your next trip.

Great light and color! Love the close crop, really shows the texture in the skin.
