    Default African Wild Dog Kill

Not for sensitive viewers! I had this once in a lifetime experience of witnessing the wild dogs killing the waterbuck cow. The buck was trying to get to the water in an effort to shake off the dogs. She did make it to the water's edge, but was by that time too weak to go in deep enough to get rid of the dogs and they brought her down. A third dog joined and helped to pull her out of the water. The rest of the pack arrived about an hour later to join in the feast. The pack stayed with the carcass for two days gorging themselves. This was captured at the Ratlhogo waterhole in the Pilanesberg National Park.

A graphic image well captured here Gerrie, with the lead WD really putting the brakes on in an effort to halt the Waterbuck! Would like to size a larger image size posted.
    Well done nonetheless.

Well, that is life in the bush and animals kill for one reason, to EAT!

It might be distressing, but it is all part of nature, however sadly Wild Dogs are not the quickest at despatching their victim, running it down until it's exhausted, then... You have to feel for the victim. The image does convey a feeling of helplessness and impending doom by the Waterbuck.

must've been an exhilirating sighting! they are cruel, often starting to eat their victim long before it dies of shock and blood loss. great drama here!

Great sighting, Gerrie, and not for the faint hearted, but the reality of animal behaviour. It may help to explain why game and stock farmers mostly do not like to have these guys around, to the point of killing them on sight despite their conservation status. Action well captured. PP wise I would consider cloning the BG rock right below the waterbuck's face out, and maybe play a little with selective levels & curves to make the buck & dogs pop more. That said, an experience & shot I really envy.

I have to step in here to defend Wild Dogs. They are the most sucessful of predators in Africa, their dispatching method is disemboweling I have never seen an animal alive for more than 2 minutes after being hit by a pack of Wild Dog. In comparison the kills by Lion are extremely long lasting, Hyena can be even worse.
The capture is in my view quite a rarity as I have seen very few images of Wild Dog kills, thanks for posting.

I will have to agree with Ken. From what I have read and heard, wild dogs have always been referred as very efficient hunters.

Love the image but as it is mentioned before, would like it even more if the rock right under bucks nose was not there. Adding some pop to the image would add to it as well.

    Cheers,
    Kartik
