one i found today taken earlier in the year at anhinga trail. i actually added some canvas up front of the bird for composition. no cropping at all. put the bg on a layer by itself and added a bi-color filter in nik color efex pro and ran NR. sharpened the bird and then the eye once more on a layer by itself.

    D300, bigma at 500mm, f/6.3, 1/1600s, 0EV, ISO 800, fill flash

thanks for looking. comments and critiques much appreciated.

Good job of getting the face sharp to the tip of the bill. Amazing eye and nice and sharp. Bi-colour filter is used nicely, just enough to punch up the colour in the BG.

Cleans BG is a great thing and the sign of a pro,..nice work!

Love the eye, how do you put BG on a separate layer to run NR was this done with a NIK plug-in?

What I like the best is you show the beauty of this baby, he/she looks like they are pondering thought, I believe birds have souls,.. and your camera found it,.. and that is not a plus-in one can purchase - well done.

    thanks everyone for the replies.

jeff, i have no idea if this is the right way to do it, but i select the bird with the quick selection tool. then invert it to select the bg. i know there are other ways. this one has seemed to work well for me.

    thanks again!!

Head is sharp with lots of fine details, and what an amazing eye you capture here, love it. Also like what you done with the background but might run another round of NR. Congrat on this being a full frame as well.
