    Default Question RE SLR Video

I have never tried to do much video before. However, my wife used to do dome digital video with a camcorder. Now we can use the 7D and soon to arrive 1DMK4 video features to create some clips. My question is what frame rate to use to make video which will be edited and copied to DVD for showing to other people? Canon says the 30 fps is good for "internet" and 24 fps for "film look" and 60 fps - but with lower resolution for "fast motion".

Kind of confusing to a newbee. Thanks for any advice.

    Ed,
First I think you need to ask, standard video or HD video? If HD I think distribution is still difficult. You can post HD on youtube now, but you need a blue ray write for HD disks.
If you shoot at 60 fps, can you play back at that rate? if not then it will appear s slow motion.

I have done a little HD video with my 5D Mark II, and I must say it is simply stunning! Even in very low light. The image quality blows away any consumer camcorder. If you are using any IS lenses, you will need a microphone that is isolated from the camera or else you get IS noise in the audio. I got a microphone that mounts in the clash hot shoe.

Thanks Roger. My wish is to produce HD video which I can make a DVD from to play back on my DVD player displayed my HD TV. So, is that 24 fps? I plan to use IS lenses. The video will actually be a supplement to images made in Africa in February. We plan mostly stills, but some video as well.

I am not aware that you can put HD video on a DVD and play in a DVD as HD video. How is that done?

No Ed, don't assume I'm right. I don't know if you can or can't play HD from a DVD. I just don't know how you would do it. Then I assume only some DVD layers would play HD. I looked at the manual on my DVD player and it doesn't say anything about HD, for example. I do have a blue ray player, but no blue ray writer on a computer to make HD blue ray disks. I am interested in getting this capability and it seems prices have dropped enough to make it reasonable.

Thanks again. I do not have Blu Ray - just the older player. I have a DVD recorder on order to copy my old VHS and camcorder videos to DVD. Sometime this week I will try to make a movie with the 7D and copy the file to a DVD from my computer, then try to play it on the HD TV through my computer and let you know how it worked. Thanks for the conversation. I really appreciate your assistance.

Anyone have recommendations for an external mic that is hot-shoe mountable??

I still wonder if lens noise would be recorded. The mics I use for video (not digital cameras) are isolated with mounts having a rubber suspension system the mics slid through. Even then none are camcorder mounted.

    Hi Ed,
I read your post with interest. There still seems to be an element or two missing and that is what software can we edit this video in and was it packaged with the camera and if so how do we use it? It would be interesting also to hear from the readers of this post about their experience with this new built-in video we have been so blessed with. It's a great addition even if we didn't need it but how do we use it? Remember most of us are still photographers not cinema ones. So add these questions also to the ones Ed is asking because surely at some time he will need this information as well. Good luck Ed I'll be looking forward to hearing how you make out. This is really an issue that needs to be addressed if we are to enjoy the full range of functions we have purchased.

I have done a few HD videos with my 5D Mark II. I had previously bought a typical consumer video camera, but the sensor was on the order of 6 mm: smaller than the typical P&S camera. With such a small sensor, image quality is not that good. When I got the 5DII, I tested the video and it is stunning. I had looked at some pro video system for $10,000 but they had sensors much smaller than the 5DII.

Example: at a wedding, there was a dance floor at the reception with the lights turned down. Still images were 1/3 second at iso 1600 with the zoom lens I had on. But the HD 1080p video is very impressive, a little grainy but still impressive.

Imagine supertelephoto lenses and the kind of video photographers with this kind of equipment can obtain.
But, just like photography is a skill, video is a different skill and another learning experience.

i have been away from the computer for a few days due to work and remodeling our kitchen, so I did not yet have a chance to try the video seriously. Bob, regarding editing, I have not gotten to that point yet. I guess I was going to try the editing software that I was using in the "old days". I don't see any SW that came with the 7D.

I have been playing around with the 7D video feature for a couple of months. I am still an unskilled newby but am very impressed with the capabilities. In answer to a previous post, the Rode videomic mounts on the hotshoe and works well. Just make sure the plug is all the way in or you get no sound at all. I also have the z finder which helps a lot with manual focus in live view.

I am still editing on my imac using i movie. It works for rudimentary editing and it is easy to make movies. I will upgrade to final cut express someday.

I was playing my movies on a regular DVD player until recently getting a blue ray player. The quality really improved with the blue ray player, but I'm sure this is just due to newer upscaling in the new player since the imac does not burn discs at 1080p.

I shoot in 1080p at the 24 frame rate. It is important to go full manual and to keep the shutter speed at a speed of 50.

    Have fun!
