I like the warm light from just minutes prior to sunset. Would have preferred less wind so smoother water.
    Comments and suggestions appreciated.

    Tony:

Lovely bird, a new one for me. I like the red accents from the eye and legs. The whites do look rather 'smooth'
did you have to do much recovery in post? I find with the hooded mergansers locally, which have the same kind of balance of whites and blacks, that I am often going to -1 or -1 1/3 to keep from blowing the whites, depending on the exact illumination. (Nikon D300 & D700).

Perhaps however, this is just one of those birds without large amounts of detail in the whites.

Hope to see more of this species.
    Cheers

I like this a lot. Great light and pose, love the eye. I have no clue how to crop so I will be interested to see if anyone comments on that aspect. Just as a wild guess, I think more room behind the tail and some off the right. But I am just testing my hunch here, there does not seem to be a formula.

The crop works for me Tony. I like the low angle. I think the head could use some additional sharpening.

Thanks for the comments, Guys. Randy, this didn't need any recovery through ACR. They are just pretty "smooth" birds with little plumage texture, especially with the flat frontal lighting.

Tony, good exposure on the Stilt, and I can clearly see the warm light in this. Well done for leaving space for the legs, and just love their red eyes.
