    Default Osprey with fish

I was tickled pink to see my first Ospreys on the NSW north coast a week ago. Sadly work and conference had to intrude, but two mornings in a row were spent observing and photographing as many species as possible. These raptors had a nest 150 meters from my balcony at the resort and both mornings I woke to their calls and the calls of wonderful Rainbow Bee-eaters and Figbirds, Blue-faced Honeyeaters et al.

This image is full frame, and I had to add a sliver of canvas on the RHS as the wing was just a little close.

    30D, 300/4L + 1.4x, ISO500, f/9, 1/800th, +2/3 EC, HH.

In hindsight, I could have probably given up a stop of aperture for some more SS.

Akos, this looks great to me. I really like the placement of this guy in the frame and nice job composing in-camera! It looks sharp on my monitor so I'm not sure that you the extra SS would have helped or not.

Agree that the lack of shutter speed didn't hurt here, but as a general rule f/9 is probably overkill in the DOF department for BIF. It's actually a very nice flight shot. The horizontal wing position doesn't bother me at all because you've got a nice exposure and the angle of the bird highlights the underwing detail. I like the eye contact and the way the Osprey is gripping its meal.

Great flight shot showing how the Osprey points the fish in an aerodynamic position for an easier flight! Like the position of the bird in the frame as well.

    Akos:

This is an excellent image, with a strong diagonal line, great composition and most interesting subject matter.

Still, I agree with you that more SS would have made the image even better; if only those wing tips could have been as sharp as the center of the image, you would have closely approached perfection.:)

But it's a fine capture nevertheless! TFS.

I like the flyby pose and underwing details, the fish adds to it. A lower angle would have made it even stronger.

Hey Bro, great job you have, photographing before conferences. I like the placement in the frame here, overall well exposed, and of course, his catch a bonus. Have you got any with the wings either fully extended up or down. Cheers.

bro this is great! love the fall of light on the face and the hint of wing blur is good since it gives me that motion forward feeling. looks nice and sharp where it matters and you exposed the under-wings masterfully.
