    Default Black Bear Stare

    Info 20/05/2009 1627

Canon Rebel XTI with Canon 70-200IS F2.8L plus 2x convertor

    640mm
    ISO 800
    1/80 sec
    F5.6
    Exposure Comp -1/3

This was a shot I took earlier in the year on a Black Bear viewing trip in Tofino on Vancouver Island. The bear rarely acknowledged our existence but I was determined to get an eye contact shot.

I like this shot considering the high ISO on a rebel xti, very slow shutter speed, and 2x tele convertor.

It seems light was pretty low. A round of sharpening would be better. Do you have a vertical?

No, I could only manage this shot. I was perched on the end of a boat and had the lens on a trip pod which I was using like a monopod because the boat was bobbing up and down so much it was almost impossible to get a decent shot given the light. Given the circumstances I was impressed to have gotten this shot and not to have been pushed overboard by the other excitable folk on the boat.

I can't imagine that it is photographed at 1/80 from a boat. You did well. I like Peter's repost. Look forward to more.

What do you think ?
Wow now all you have to do is teach me how to do that :) I really like these changes. The image looks far sharper and the colour is better. Being able to edit photos well is such an important part of creating great images and I am slowly getting my way through digital basics, although this now means going back to some old images and seeing what can be done.

Thank you for taking the time to create a repost.

Thanks Sabyasachi, I was extremely happy to get this shot considering all the rocking about, using a 2x teleconvertor, and being restricted to the xti's 3.5fps.

The repost looks great and shows how good the original image is. Good job getting this from a boat.

Nice job with the conditions. I like Saby's idea of a vertical and Peter's repost took it up a notch.

Like the intense stare and eye contact. I agree a vert would look really nice. I also see a little blue in the bear as well.

Thanks for the comments folks. My PC is in the shop getting fixed hence the late reply. When I got home after this trip I thought I should have included the whole bear so I could create a vert shot but oh well I know for next time.
