    Sacred Kingfisher - (Todiramphus sanctus)

Taken about an hour drive north of Sydney. I have recently found a nesting pair so I hope to be able to photograph them again this season.

Taken as a vertical ~ 85% of full frame

Great BG and HA. Prey is amazing - can almost see the expression on the skink's face.

Fantastic shot Ofer. Composition is spot on and the fact that you can see all the details of that skink puts this one over the top. Good luck with this years nesting pair.

Stunning image Ofer. Great eye contact for the bird and lizard. The lizard puts this image over the top.

Nice kingfisher. Like the pose, composition, very nice colors, BG, detail, light. What makes it special to me is the great eye contact with the lizard. I hope you will have the chance to get more photos of this bird. 85% full frame...must make a great print.

Ofer, I think this shot has lost some very fine detail by the use of the X2 extender but without it there's a good chance you would have missed it.

I'd also like to see a slightly taller and wider crop.

Apart from that mate, well done.

    Thanks for your comments guys!
Richard, I am not sure where you see lost of detail. (keep in mind this is a tiny resized version). When this image was printed as a 90 x 60 cm or so print - the detail were mind blowing.
These birds were not an easy subject as even when using a hide - they were looking at the lens and the noise of the shutter made them quite nerveous. I had to choose between using the x2 and get a nearly full frame image or go with the x1.4 and have to crop. Based on the image quality I think I got the right descision.

I have never seen a KF with anything else in its beak than a fish. Lovely pose, showing off his catch to you. Hope you get to see the nesting pair.

This is really great. Huge impact when you view the image. The prey in the beak and the fact that you can see the prey's face puts this way over the top. Very nice.

Very good shot Ofer, the proper eye contact of bird as well as the lizard as well as the separation of lizard here makes it from good to great picture. Congrats!!

G'day Ofer - didn't notice this shot until now, well done it's a beauty. I have an almost identical slide but its a Yellow Robin with the skink. How high up was the nest? I've yet to find one that is even remotely low enough to think about setting something up.

    cheers
    Rob
