He was walking around on my back patio, overcast day note small shadow and shutter speed. Might be expanding range due to cold weather, have not seen this species for a long time. I have recently hung suet feeders in the back as well.

IMHO your best work so far. Good composition and detail. Overcast days are my absolute favorite. I think the image has a few very minor problems. I'd go a little more on the depth of field: the tail OOF OK, but the right foot might be a problem. A higher shutter speed is probably warranted for what I presume a pretty active bird. As you know for either of these, or both together, you would need a higher ISO. Remember, under these conditions you can overexpose considerably, and since the image will be overexposed (until you bring it back in PS), noise shouldn't be an issue to at least ISO 800. regards~Bill

Hi Jeff - nice and sharp - not seeing any of the reported 7D softness in this image. More DOF?? maybe - but still a very nice image. Good HA and eye contact and exposure looks good.

A couple of points by Bill ... at this distance it will be difficult to have the tail within the dof, we might just have to wait for a different pose more parallel !! .. exposure wise we do want to expose to the right but not over exposed I'm sure that is what you meant.
Jeff might take a little of the top? Just taste Looking forward to seeing your bird feeder visitors !!!
TJ,
I agree with you. I had the tripod set at about 3 feet and when he landed I hit the button. Could have tried to lower it a bit but too low would have introduced other issues. The spot on the left is part of the image but when it was posted it does look a bit distracting, I can remove if needed - thanks for the feedback.
Bill,
It could me be, but I am not having any luck with higher ISO's with the 7D. Hence, I am afraid to shoot over ISO's 400,..?

I meant the OOF black spot at the edge of the frame on the left, if you follow the beak in straight line you will hit it, not sure if we are talking about the same spot or not.
Oh my gosh that is the cutest thing! Not a very technical comment, but the pose (and the chance to see a shot of this species) is really wonderful. Pardon my enthusiasm!
