a royal tern found on crandon beach this morning. it's been so long since i did birds, i didnt even know what to do in Ps. i still dont!! full frame. no crop. i did have to rotate it a little and fill in some spots because of that. slight contrast boost, lightened the eye, ran NR and sharpened. you can blow it up and look into the eye and see the ocean and sunrise!! way cool!!!!
D300, 300, f/4, 1/2000s, 0EV, ISO 400. i was using aperture priority as the light was changing and by backgrounds were staying the same all time.
thanks for looking. comments and critiques much appreciated.
Hi Harold,
I like the pose and the comp - looks great - and the bright orange beak and black legs. Much to like.
There isn't a lot of detail in the whites on part of the neck and upper breast, although it doesn't look blown. Is this about where I should be aiming to get the whites in this sort of situation? In my own images I sometimes find there are areas like this where there is tone but no detail and I'm not sure where to go with it.
Hi Harold !! You got there early enough for the soft warm light !!! Love it !!
Gerald the whites do look fine and show detail, besides having a perfect exposure you need the right light and processing. Will past a link to one Fabs posted in birds that does show what can be done with whites, light was starting to get harsh but diffused by clouds. Image was made a couple of hours after Harold's !! http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...ad.php?t=50454
Love the low angle, the composition, the sharpness and very good exposure too. If you wish to you can bring out more details in the white. Very good image, should start shooting bird again.
OK!!! you guys are getting too good!! i have to admit. i didnt put the bird on a layer when i ran NR. it got NR'd too. that's probably why it doesnt have as much detail as it should. i'll go back and do it without the NR and repost. see if it is better.
