Last weekend was the first time I got a glimpse of this little guy - a Tufted Titmouse - and I was so excited to see something new at my feeders. Then, today, he reappeared only he brought a friend with him. So my question is...if you have more than one Tufted Titmouse do you then have titmouses or titmice? :D

I always say "Titmice" when I have more than one at the feeder. I just love these guys and so look forward to them in the winter. Wonderful pose with those clenched feet and the sunflower in his beak.

These are really nice feeder guests, I like their crest and eyelashes. I say 'titmice', too.

Lana, I've noticed the ones that have come around are extremely skittish...are yours that way as well? They dive bomb in, grab one piece of food and dive bomb back out.

That is the way they normally behave around here, too. They take one sunflower seed, fly to a nearby branch, put it between their feet and start pecking to open and eat small pieces.

We call them Titmice as well. They are also expert dive bombers in NY.

I call them Titmice as well, Jules...Here in Northern Calif., we have the Oak Titmouse. For the last 4 years, we've had Titmice use the nest box just a few feet from our back door. Some years they have two clutches. They a joy to watch and listen to. We can always tell when there's a Scrub Jay hanging around nearby - The Titmice really give the Jays a hard time because they come after their fledglings - usually not successfully..

    Cheers,

    Bruce

Mine are skittish during the first part of the winter......sort of a grab and go. However, they become much more calm by the end of the winter as they equate me with "food".

    Tony, crack me up!

Judy - thanks...now I know it's not just my environment but the fact that they just don't like hanging around. I'll have to work on that...
