    Default Topaz Noise Reduction

I have been using Noise Ninja for several years now, but have been thinking of switching to Topaz. I know many of you are using this software, so I want your input.

The videos on the website make it look easy. Do you find it as good and fast and easy as it looks?

After optimizing noise and enhancing detail do you still sharpen the image?

Thanks for any input you all can give.

    Ed,

I use both and find them both easy to use. I'm not sure which I think does the best job, it may depend on the image.

I read on another retouching forum that none of the noise reduction programs is perfect. You want the best result? Use different programs for different images, or even different program for different parts of the same image.

I have Topaz Denoise and Noise Ninja. Noise Ninja has quite a bit faster processing time, Denoise has a slight edge in image quality. Other than for reducing noise in backgrounds, I have little use for noise reduction programs. The loss of detail, with the smoothing they all do, is rarely a good thing IMHO. I prefer to use proper ISO and overexposure with soft lighting conditions to reduce noise in the first place.
I am not real happy with Topaz Detail, as opposed to most of their other stuff. Although they claim it does not create noise, not in my experience. It is the nature of sharpening. High Pass, smart sharpen or USM are better options. regards~Bill

I agree with desmond - depends on the image.
I use Noise Ninja and Genuine Fractals (along with Noel Carboni's actions) - Genuine fractals method rarely produces any nasty halo's.

Thanks for all the replies and advice. The problem I have with NN is that the auto profiles - even those I create using their color chart and my camera - reduces too much detail. I then end up applying NN with the brushes which takes a lot of time. I thought if Topaz really did a better job of preserving detail I would switch.

Over Thanks Giving I will actually have some time to process some images and compare the results.

    Thanks again.

Ed, I would check out Noiseware prof, recommended to me by our own PS guru David Thomasson.
Alfred had been using Topaz and was very impressed when I showed him what NWP could do.

Another vote for Noiseware Professional. It is easy to add an automatic action for it in Lightroom.
