    Default Barn Owl flight (c)

    Attached Images Attached Images

Shot yesterday at one of Ray Barlows workshops in Ontario, Canada

I was having problems all day getting sharp pictures with my 7D + 70-200 2.8 non IS L it was the first time I used the combo, actually it was the first time I have ever really used the lens at all. I am pretty sure it needs microadjustment because the focus does not seem to be dead on in any of the pictures, even when the birds were stationary.

anyway it was a great day regardless, next time I will have it adjusted :)

lovely birds and this barn owl was my favorite

    shot with
    7D, 70-200 2.8 non IS L @200mm, ISO 800, f6.3 1/1000 + 2/3EV
also had to clone out the jesses that were hanging

This is lovely, very cool flight pose, only wish the Owl would be looking directly down the lens.
I would also add a bit of contrast and maybe anothr round of sharpening.

thanks guys, I didnt want to over do the sharpening but I guess you cant really see that when the picture is downsized so much

the eye contact would have been nice for sure :)

    Jamie...

Aren't you doing your final sharpening once you have resized for your presentation...as in here for posting on the web? Perhaps I misconstrued what you said relative to downsizing...it made me thing that you're doing your sharpening before you achieve final size.

Sharpness does look a tad soft and the whites on the leading edge of the wing look a bit hot...whites on the head look fine on my end.

I agree with Danny regarding head position...especially when shooting captive birds, I would think that proper planning ought to have you right where you should be for an optimal image.

no I did the sharpening on the full size picture, but I guess doing it after makes much more sense

yeah the sharpness is not spot on, nor was it on most of the pictures I am pretty sure the lens needs adjustment, I have pics of the birds with better position but they are even less sharp than this :(

I could tell on the screen it was not spot on but did not realize how bad they were until I downloaded them after the event, I should have just used the 100-400

    oh well live and learn

this is a nice shot Jamie, and I like the angle here... when the barn owl was flying we had a sligh overcast, which will make things difficult for cameras to focus, especially with a head on flightpath.

Looking forward to seeing more of your images bud, and thanks very much for making the trek to join us., very cool!

Great capture against nice colorful BG. Like the eye contact, focus does seem to be quite soft though.

I like the overall shot Jamie but it is a bit soft. I ran another round of sharpening (300/0.2/0) on it and decreased the brightness of the highlights on the face a bit. You should definitely be doing your sharpening on the resized image.
